LGBTQ Equality March for Unity and Pride
LGBTQ Equality March for Unity and Pride
Join us as Las Cruces LGBTQ+ community organizations, members and thier allies unite for an Equality March for Unity and Pride. We will march in solidarity with cities nationwide on Sunday, June 11, 2017, one year after the horrific shootings at Pulse, the LGBT nightclub in Orlando, Florida. Our march aims to unite folks who identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community and to stand in solidarity for justice and equality in our nation and local communities.
We are in a critical moment in which we must mobilize the diverse LGBTQ+ community to voice and address the multiple intersecting concerns of those in our communities who are targeted due to their gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, immigration status, ethnicity, religion, mental health and disability.
Those that identify as LGBTQ+ are welcome to march. We also welcome our loving allies, friends and family members to stand and walk alongside us in this important march. We kindly ask our allies to allow space for LGBTQ members to speak during this time together.
People of all ages, abilities and identities are invited to attend the event.
A community open mic session and music will begin at 10AM at the Plaza de Las Cruces in downtown Las Cruces. Singing Out, our local LGBTQ and ally choir, will perform at 10:45AM with a preview of their concert that will take place later that afternoon at First Christian Church. At 11AM, speakers from the LGBTQ+ community will start sharing their remarks. The march is scheduled to begin at 11:30AM.
Please wear brightly-colored or multi-colored clothes to represent our LGBTQ+ community. Also, please bring your own suncreeen and water bottles. Pride flags and signs to be carried or waved through the march are welcomed.
***This event is wheelchair accessible. The march will take place on sidewalks for safety. For wheelchair or walker users who may not be able to stay on the sidewalk all of the time, volunteers will be available to assist with going through the road when necessary. If you don’t feel capable about completing the full circuit, there are points in the march where you can step out.
We would like to remind all of those attending to please avoid using scented products which would help those who are unable to tolerate scents.
We are currently working on getting sign interpreters to help with this occasion.***
Organizational co-hosts: PFLAG Las Cruces, Doña Ana LGBTQ Collective, Transgender Resources and Communities of Las Cruces, Singing Out LGBTQ & Ally Choir, Equality New Mexico, and ACLU of NM Regional Center for Border Rights.
