Do you know that 2018 was a big year in the climate world? The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) report, Global Warming of 1.5ºC, and the Fourth National Climate Assessment, which warns about unchecked temperature rise, and its effects – which affect ALL Americans, and describes what we need to do to stop it – has never been more clear.

Climate deniers – read: President Donald Trump – and Big Polluters continue to block progress. We have a lot of work to do in 2019 to protect the health of our families and the future of our planet.

Are you willing and able to help make a better world a reality? What is YOUR 2019 Climate Resolution?

2019 is the “YEAR OF THE BOLD AGENDA,” says our new representative, Deb Haaland. Her New Year’s resolution is to take on hard topics, like addressing the problem of our missing and murdered indigenous women, as well as universal healthcare, a Green New Deal, and more. New Mexicans should be proud to have elected a bold, FIERCE woman! I know I am.

What’s legal, what’s illegal, and what’s unethical?

It’s certainly legal for your nonprofit to rent from you, and pay for other services you provide. But you have to provide those things AT MARKET RATE – you can’t overcharge. You CAN undercharge, but the balance is reported as a donation.

Take your emotion out of this, for a moment, and pretend that we aren’t talking about the Trump’s. Where non-profits are concerned, a ripple effect from this BEHAVIOR could be chilling. Imagine if it were to become unethical – and then illegal – to rent your property, or provide paid services or goods, to a non-profit in which you are the principle. It would become hard to start a new, small, non-profit because you couldn’t use your kitchen table.

Non-profits are audited less, and less. After this, that trend may begin to change.

And as for political entities, for gods’ sake, don’t shift donations into your own pocket.

What are your thoughts on the actions of the Inauguration Committee and the Trump Organization? Or, have you seen this happen elsewhere – inside, or outside of politics? If so, include a link.

Oops! Imagine Giuliani making a gaffe like this. The problem with people who like the limelight is they are always IN the light. In politics, that often helps out the “other side.”
